Character
Name: Belle
Fandom: Disney’s Beauty and the Beast
Gender: Female
Age: 19
Time Period: After the snow ball fight scene.
Wing Color: Light Blue.
History: Here and here.
Personality: Belle is described as being a very peculiar girl by the people in her town because of her interest in books over other things, like marriage, her appearance, and caring about how she’s perceived by her peers. And when you stop to think about the time period she lives in, they’re right, she is a rather odd girl. Not because of her intelligence or love for books, but because those are just not things people thought women should care about in those days. So it comes as no surprise that Belle doesn’t seem to fit in anywhere at home; because how does a woman with very modern thoughts and ideas about herself fit into a world that is only interested in how pretty she is and what a good wife she’ll be. Belle wants more for herself than what everyone else, i.e. Gaston, would have planned for her. She wants adventure and romance and to not be stuck in a little, small-minded town for the rest of her life raising eight or nine kids. She’s a dreamer in a time where women weren’t supposed to have dreams or lives of their own. So yes, she’s very…odd.
But she’s also very lonely. She has her father, sure, but he’s always busy working on his next invention and seems to be pretty oblivious to how his daughter is fairing in the town they live in. And then there’s the farm animals that she tends to talk to from time to time, and if that’s not a sign of loneliness I don’t know what is. And then there are her books. They act as her very best of friends because they allow her to get lost in someone else’s story for a little while and take her on adventures she can only dream of. When she has her books she can be whatever she wants to be, whenever she wants. And, honestly, she can find way more things in common with fictional characters than she can with the townspeople. That is, until she comes to Beast’s castle, and is suddenly surrounded by a handful of people…um, household appliances that befriend her and accept her for who she is. There’s also the added bonus of her not being the oddest one in the place anymore.
All of that aside, Belle is a very smart, confident, open-minded girl who just happens to also be beautiful. And it’s the kind of beauty that comes naturally because she doesn’t care at all about her appearance. She dresses modestly, and with very little make-up and she still manages to be the most beautiful girl in her town without even trying. Her intelligence and strong vocabulary comes from spending most of her free time reading books. She also seems very immune to peer pressure. There’s only one small moment when she asks her father whether he thinks she’s strange or not due to what the townspeople are saying about her, but she doesn’t seem to be particularly bothered by it. It also appears in moments when Gaston tries to convince her to marry him by stating how strange her love of books is and that she needs to pay more attention to important things…like him. Yeah. So she takes people’s opinions in stride when they conflict with hers, but she never tries to argue that another’s opinions are wrong, even when they are, and she never responses in a rude manner and is more likely to politely brush it off or make a joke…at least until she’s alone or has her animal friend around to unload on.
And here is where I mention that she has a bit of a fiery temper lurking all the intelligence and kindness. She is definitely no push over and will hold her ground in an argument even if she’s in said argument with a giant, strong, and scary looking chimera man three times her size. And she’s definitely not the person to play the “this wouldn’t have happened if you” game with because she’ll usually win. And all of this also makes her pretty brave. Not brave in a “not afraid of anything” kind of way, but brave in an “I know standing up to this guy might get me killed but I have a point to make” kind of way. And a part of that bravery probably stems from the fact that she can be stubborn as hell to. Like her refusal to marry Gaston when he tries to hang Maurice being taken to the loony bin over her head. She doesn’t back down once she’s made up her mind about something. She also happens to hate being told what to do.
She’s all these things: intelligent, stubborn, brave, with a fiery temper all wrapped up in a pretty appearance. But what’s missing is actually the very core of her character; her kindness and willingness to accept people for who they are inside and not rely on appearances to be a deciding factor. She’s far more concerned with a person’s inner beauty than how gorgeous they are or what they have to offer her. She has a generous soul and gives her forgiveness freely even when people don’t ask for it. Basically if you’re nice to her, she’ll be nice to you. By now she’s probably seen far stranger things than you anyways.
Strengths:
Physical: Belle has no special physical abilities. She’s a completely ordinary young woman. But she does have a tendency to walk around while she reads while managing not to trip, fall, walk into things, people, pets, etc. So that’s pretty impressive. And she’s a competent horse rider which is demonstrated when she rides Philippe through the forest to look for her father, and the time she runs away from the castle back into the forest, and the time she rides back to the castle to stop the mob trying to kill Beast.
Mental: She’s very strong-will and determined. This is best shown in the scene where she tries to treat Beast’s injuries after he saves her from the wolves. He isn’t being very cooperative but she still tries to disinfect the wound, even after he screams at her that it hurts and they get in an argument over who is to blame and she wins forcing Beast to let her finish. She’s also extremely kind hearted and caring. Again we have to go back to the time she was nearly mauled by wolves and Beast saves her and then passes out in the snow. Belle has to choose whether to leave him there and continue home or take him back to the castle and stay there. And despite wanting her freedom, she takes him back and treats his wounds despite the fact that he was awful to her most of the time she’d known him so far. She’s also smart and fast thinking, things that are shown when she charms Cogsworth into letting her tour the castle and when she quickly figures out the castle is under an enchanted spell.
Emotional: She’s very mature and emotionally stable. The only time she really seems to lose control of her emotions is during extreme situations. For example, she cries when she’s separated from her father without getting to say goodbye and believes she’ll never seen him again, and when Beast dies right in front of her. And she only gets scared or angry when Beast violently intimidates her or starts arguments with her. For all other, less serious situations, she’s very calm and demure, even when people (read: Gaston) are irritating and/or not-so-subtly insulting her. So she has fairly good control over her emotions.
Weaknesses:
Physical: Like I said above, she possess no special physical abilities. So this leaves her open to all the limitations women have in being physically weaker than a butch man that might want to overpower her and lock her into a storm cellar so she can’t stop him and his mob from killing the man that she loves. She’s also not particularly helpful during vicious wolf attacks because swinging a big stick around will only do so much.
Mental: She’s fairly curious and hates being told what to do. And this can sometimes get her into a lot of trouble. The greatest example being when Beast, Cogsworth and Lumiere all tell her not to go to the West Wing and she does anyways and gets caught by Beast, throwing him into a rage because she could have damaged the magical rose and cause him and the castle to remain in their current forms forever. So, yeah, never tell her to do or not do something because she’ll do the opposite.
She also doesn’t always have the greatest ideas. Sure she’s quick thinking and smart, but sometimes her plans fall through. Like when she decided to show the entire town that Beast did exist so they wouldn’t put her father in the asylum…and then Gaston formed them into a mob to ‘kill the beast’. So yeah, sometimes she follows through on ideas that if she thought through a little more, she’d realize are really bad ideas.
Emotional: So she has a fair amount of control over her emotions, true, but she also tends to hide a lot of what she’s feeling behind a calm and kind exterior, like when Gaston insults her love of reading and then hits on her, but instead of telling him off she makes a small comment that he doesn’t understand and then brushes him off. And when she talks to her father about not fitting in, she makes it sound like it’s not a big deal even though it’s clear that she wishes she could have someone to talk to. It can sometimes make it hard to distinguish whether she’s really bothered about something or not.
Samples
First Person: Oh, what am I doing in the forest? [The voice is soft and feminine and seems to be coming from a distance. Which it is because Belle’s journal happens to be lying open besides her, but she hasn’t noticed it yet.]
Beast? Philippe? Can anyone hear me? [She goes silent for a long moment, presumably listening for any response. When none come she sighs deeply and shifts position, her hand landing on the journal.] What’s this? Hello? Can someone hear me? I seem to be lost in the forest. My name is Belle and I would great appreciate some help.
[She doesn’t sound at all thrown by the fact that there are voice coming out of the journal, or that it seems to be magical. She’s met a fair share of magical, talking objects in the past few days so it’s no longer a surprise.]
Third Person: Before she started living in the castle and met Beast, Cogsworth, Lumiere, and the others, all she’d wanted was to have a great adventure. Like something out of one of her stories. She’s wanted her Prince Charming to come into town and sweep her off her feet and carry her off to fight a wicked witch or a powerful dragon. But after her short stay in the castle she’d started to think that maybe adventure wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. And now that she was stuck in Luceti, she was fairly sure that she’s had enough adventure to last her the rest of her life.
The village was nice enough, sure. And she was making friends, something she’d never really had before living in Beast’s castle. But there were a few things she was struggling to come to terms with. Like the fact that they were stuck here, possibly forever, and that she’d never see her father, or Mrs. Potts and Chip, or Lumiere ever again. When she’d made her promise to never leave the castle, she’d resigned herself to never seeing her father again. But there had always been a hope that he’d come back for her one day. But here, there was no hope of that.
But it wasn’t all for naught. Beast was here as well, trying to make her feel as welcome and comfortable as he can. And she appreciated having a familiar face here with her. And there were so many kind people here that were willing to help her when she was lost in the forest. So, this wasn’t a bad place. But it wasn’t the place she’d planned to spend the rest of her life. Finally, she gave on trying to read and closes the book lying in front of her. The library was particularly quiet this afternoon, leaving Belle only her thoughts to keep herself company. Even reading couldn’t keep her attention.
But she wasn’t about to let this place get her down. She got up from the chair she’d been sitting in and goes to the shelves housing the cooking books. Taking one down, she flips through it, looking for something she thought Beast might like. She’d had to do all the cooking for her father, but nothing extravagant. Frankly, she’d been spoiled with food since coming to live in the castle, but now that it was only the two of them, Belle felt that maybe she should try something fancy as a thank you to Beast for being so kind since she’d arrived. She smiled at the thought of his reaction and finally settled on a recipe.
